FIUTS Memories

In 2008 FIUTS celebrates 60 years of building peace and understanding through friendships and cross cultural connections. Read memories of other FIUTS alumni and share yours with us.

As a Fulbright exchange student I spent one year at the U.W.for 1961-1962. The year 1961 was centnial for the U.W. It was very impressive to hear a centennial address of the U.S.President Johna F.Kennedy who was invited to join the Central Convocation of the U.W. on November 16,1961. Next year I enjoyed International Friendship Tour to eastern Washington which was well organized by FIUTS during the spring vacation in 1962.

Ladies and Gentlemen, as I was a foreign student from Belgium, from 1949 till 1953 B.S. Chemistry  I was active in the events from the foreign students, [with] Director Jim Davies.

I do clearly remember VISA Visiting International Students Association. Every year we had a show, which went on the road to towns outside Seatle , Wenatchee, Bellingham etc. We chartered a University bus and driver and at the end of the day when we balanced out the cost of the tour and the sale of the tickets we made a profit.

A few years ago 2003, I met with Aida Kourmourjadin Irak (Armenia), Ann Mari Simonson (Norway), Louis Christianson (Denmark), Leonhardo Bustamente (Ecuador), all living in the Seattle area.

In my days, there were about 720 foreign students or about 5% of the student body. We were the third or fourth largest foreign student body at the U.S. Universities.

-Sincerely yours, Robert C. Vercamer
