International Orientation Schedule

Welcome to Orientation! Orientation officially begins on Wednesday, September 16. All new international students starting Fall Quarter are advised to arrive on September 14 or September 15.

Note: Most activities are free of charge, however some social activities require advance sign-up and cost a small fee (cash or checks only please). You can sign up and pay the fee when you arrive on campus at the Greeting Table or in the FIUTS Office.

Your official welcome to the University of Washington! Meet other new international students and scholars, and see speakers from the University of Washington, FIUTS and the community.

U-District Tour and Lunch, 12:30-2:30pm
Following Opening Day's events, join current students for a tour of the U-District and lunch at a restaurant.

Q&A Session for Parents, 2pm, HUB 304D
Parents and other family members of international students are welcome to attend this session to ask questions about housing, visas, social activities, local resources, and other topics.

Thursday, September 17

Northgate Mall Shopping Trip, 1-5pm
Take the bus with student facilitators to nearby Northgate mall, where you can buy everything from bed sheets to hair dryers! This is a great chance to buy a sleeping bag for camp and learn about where to go when you need to stock up.
Meet at the Burke Museum Café
at 1pm.

International Welcome Night at the Burke Museum, 7-9pm

Seattle Challenge, 12-7pm
Meet at the HUB lobby at 12pm. Get your next clue!
Divide into teams of four to answer fun challenges in neighborhoods throughout Seattle.  Each clue will be a lively and interactive experience designed to introduce students to Seattle’s public transportation system, distinct neighborhoods, local business, parks, culture, and major attractions.  Sample coffee and snacks at various Seattle cafés, take photos with famous monuments, meet local businesspeople, solve puzzles, and much more while making new friends along the way!  At the end of the day, all participants will gather at the Seattle Center House for an awards party.


Saturday, September 19 - Sunday, September 20
Camp Casey, Whidbey Island
Spend a weekend on a beautiful island state park. Make friends and join fun activities such as hiking, sports, campfire, dancing, cultural skits and more. Sleep in renovated American Army-style barracks and visit the old bunkers! Bring a sleeping bag, clothes, shoes, lunch and water for the hike. No alcohol allowed.

Pub Quiz, 3-6pm
Join teams and test your international knowledge. Prizes will be awarded to the team with the most correct answers. This event is open to all ages - appetizer buffet included, bring money for drinks!

Puyallup Fair

The Puyallup Fair, a Northwest tradition for over 100 years, runs September 11-27, 2009. Offering big name entertainment, Puyallup Pro Rodeo, thrilling rides, agriculture, animals, fantastic home arts creations and hobby displays, favorite fair foods - warm scones dripping with butter and jam and so much more. Don't miss a minute of the fun!

Rotary International Boat Cruise, 12:30-6pm
Join the Rotary Club for a scenic harbor cruise aboard the Argosy Cruises' Spirit of Seattle. Enjoy views of downtown Seattle at sunset. This is a great chance to meet the international community of Seattle.
Meet at the Burke Museum Café at 12:30pm.

FIUTS Mini World Cup, 4-7pm
Men and women from various countries and regions will compete for the ultimate FIUTS World Cup title! This is a mini soccer (football) tournament played on shortened fields with shortened periods. Come play and/or cheer on your country mates.

Saturday, September 26
Community Barbeque (BBQ), Woodland Park, 12-5pm
Sponsored by Team Diva and Field Roast

Meet current students, community members, and other new international students and scholars at an American-style BBQ. Enjoy a game of soccer or ultimate frisbee. Families welcome! All food, condiments, water and sports equipment provided by FIUTS.


Sunday, September 27
Freshman Convocation

All-Ages Happy Hour, 4-6pm
Join us for Happy Hour on the Ave. at Shultzy's Sausage (All-Ages) or Big Time Brewery and Ale House (21 and over) for cheap drinks, food, and lots of fun! This casual, drop-in event is a great way to celebrate the end of International Orientation and the beginning of the school year. All are welcome!
