Faces of FIUTS: Kana Kitahama

Faces of FIUTS is a social media campaign that collects personal stories from individuals who are part of our work. During July and August, we will be introducing the 2020-2021 FIUTS Student Board. This week, meet Kana Kitahama, Outreach Co-Chair !

Where are you from?
I was born in Hiroshima, Japan, and grew up moving around multiple cities but my current base in Japan is Yokohama where my family lives. I briefly lived in Nantong, China too. After my high school graduation, I moved to Seattle, WA to start my college education. I chose Seattle because downtown Seattle resembles my home city Yokohama!

What's your FIUTS story?
I learned about FIUTS at the transfer-students' orientation. I had this regret that I wasn't active enough in student activities and leadership roles at Bellevue College, so I started to think about joining FIUTS to do something meaningful and grow myself.

During my first involvement with FIUTS at the event, I felt empowered to speak about my experiences and was delighted by how open-minded the UW international communities are. So I decided to take a role in the Student Board. FIUTS communities always inspire me to thrive in a world of diversity!

How will you change the world?
I will devote myself to empower children. We have a lot of global issues that more people ought to work on and that we can solve together. As a lucky person who's been empowered to go see the world by studying abroad, I want more children to have chances to learn as well as to be believed to change the world. I will be the person who believes in every child's possibility and encourages them to solve their cared issues with their own powers. And we all work together for the better world.
