How do I apply for the Homestay or Friendship Connection Program?

What is the deadline to apply?
FIUTS has a one month prior to arrival deadline for complete applications. For example, if you are arriving on January 1st, then you must apply by December 1st in order to have the best chances of being placed with a host family. In addition, no applications for spring quarter 2009 will be accepted after February 15th.
What is a complete application?
A complete application includes:
• The application form with all the information completed
• A letter of introduction to your Host or Friendship Connection
• A picture of yourself
FIUTS cannot begin processing your application without complete
information. Because of the high demand for this volunteer-provided
program, we cannot guarantee placement. However, most students who
submit complete applications are placed. The earlier FIUTS receives
your application form the sooner arrangements can be made.
What if I haven't booked a flight yet?
If you don't know your arrival date, we still recommend that you apply for a homestay. It is helpful for us to know as early as possible how many students would like to participate in the program. However, we cannot place you until we know when you arrive, so we do recommend that you book your flight soon and let us know as soon as you do.
Why do I need to send my picture?
Several reasons! First, your hosts will want to know what you look like so
they can know who will be staying with them. Also, it helps us find you at
the airport!
After I submit my application what should I do?
After you submit your application, the Homestay Coordinator will send you an
email confirming your application, and letting you know what still needs
to be done to complete your application. Please submit any needed information
as soon as possible. If at any time you need to change your arrival date,
flight number or arrival time, please let the Homestay Coordinator know immediately.
When will I find out who my Host or Friendship Connection will
be?
Once the Homestay Coordinator has your complete application, they will contact
the FIUTS volunteers in the Seattle area. This process can take quite a while,
or can be very short. Because all of our hosts are volunteers, it can be hard
to know how many will be available to help. Fall Quarter is generally the busiest
time for homestay and friendship connections. At the latest, you will be notified ONE WEEK before your arrival.
What does “volunteer” mean?
When we say that a host or Friendship Connection is a “volunteer” we
mean that they are doing this out of their own good will. They do not receive
any money to be a part of this program.
What are the fees for the Homestay or Friendship Connection
Program?
The fees are as follows:
Homestay
• $100 for an individual
• $125 for a couple
• $150 for a family
Friendship Connection
• $35 for an individual
• $40 for a couple
Please note, this fee is separate from your orientation fee and will be included
in your tuition statement.
