Faces of FIUTS: Thena Segaran

Faces of FIUTS is a social media campaign that collects personal stories from individuals who are part of our work. During July and August, we will be introducing the 2020-2021 FIUTS Student Board. This week, meet Thena Segaran, Global Gala Co-Chair!

Where are you from?
From Malaysia, I was born and raised in Ipoh, State of Perak and continued my high school in Bangi, State of Selangor. Ipoh is a pretty chill and laid-back city, compared to other big cities in Malaysia. Tourist attractions are mostly nature-oriented, and the food is really cheap. One of my favourite restaurants in Ipoh is Nam Heong White Coffee, where the dry curry noodle is unbeatable, and it only costs about RM5 ($1.18).

What's your FIUTS story?
Even before coming to Seattle, I was really curious about FIUTS. Since it is necessary for international students to participate in the Embark program organized by FIUTS, I did some research on the organization's objectives and missions. Back then I thought the activities are pretty cool but I do not have enough information regarding FIUTS. My interest in joining FIUTS sparked when I not only participated in Embark, but other activities that have been coordinated by them like the Boat Trip before the fall quarter, Monthly Wednesday Lunch, and CulturalFest.

How will you change the world?
Interest in astronomy and physics is slowly rising among people in my country, but it is still considered to be a niche field and interest. Since I'm majoring in astronomy (and physics), I would like to be involved in more STEM-based research that is closely related to my field and also participate in programs that teach young people on how to get into astronomy, such as the olympiad workshop.
