Play the Indonesia Costume Puzzle game at CulturalFest
CulturalFest, FIUTS' annual celebration of all things global on the University of Washington campus, is coming up on February 14 and 15. Over the next few weeks, we'll be profiling some of the many student volunteers who make CulturalFest happen, asking them each the same series of questions to learn more about where they're from and what they hope to share about their country or culture.
The CulturalFest Expo will feature booths from 37 different countries and regions around the world.
This week, we're featuring a profile from David and Allison, the leaders of the Indonesia booth!
Where are you from?
Hi! My name is David Sumito and my partner’s name is Allison Hartono. We are both from a country that is located in South East Asia and is rich of cultures and beautiful sceneries, Indonesia. However, we come from different region. I was born and raised in an island called Lombok Island and Allison was born and raised in the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta.
What will CulturalFest visitors be able to see and do at the Indonesia booth?
As I have mentioned earlier, our country is enriched with its culture, therefore we will be presenting famous traditional costumes from different regions and cities of Indonesia to the audience. The audience will learn about one of our cultures from our game called “Indonesia Costume Puzzle” Additionally, audience will have a chance to take pictures at photo booth that we will provide with unique properties such as Indonesian traditional costume. Furthermore, to know deeper about the richness of our cultures, we will provide a short video that represents some Indonesian traditional dance, food, and activities.
What do you most want people to know about Indonesia?
Different cultures from different regions have different way to present themselves; such as their traditional clothing, their food, or even their dance. However, these different cultures are beautiful creations that actually unify our nation as we are nowadays.
If someone was going to travel to Indonesia, where would you recommend they visit?
We would highly recommend to go to Bali Island. Most people mention this island as a second paradise. Beside beautiful beach, Bali Island also has a traditional taste in food and other sceneries. No wonder the famous movie Eat, Pray, Love was filmed in Bali. Secondly, Travelers should go to Candi Borrobudur. It is a huge temple that is enriched with Indonesian History and used to be one of the seven wonders. There are a lot of statues that have stories of the journey of heroes in the past.
If someone from the wants to know more about Indonesia, are there any books, movies, or websites you’d recommend?
Yes, these books and websites might be a good resource.

When you first arrived at the University of Washington, what surprised you the most about Seattle?
As international students from Indonesia, we found out a significant difference in the way we learn in class; such as large number of students in a classroom and people tend to be more individualistic. It was also surprising to see a very large portion of food and how people that are driving would yield and make way to pedestrians crossing the roads.
Thank you, David and Allison!
