Uzbek hospitality at CulturalFest
Dilbarkhon Akhmedova, the booth captain for Uzbekistan, shares about Uzbek hospitality, roots, and museums.
CulturalFest, FIUTS' annual celebration of all things global on the University of Washington campus, is coming up on February 14 and 15. Over the next few weeks, we'll be profiling some of the many student volunteers who make CulturalFest happen, asking them each the same series of questions to learn more about where they're from and what they hope to share about their country or culture.
The CulturalFest Expo will feature booths from 37 different countries and regions around the world.
Today, we're featuring a profile from Dilbarkhon Akhmedova, the leader of the Uzbekistan booth, who will be joined on Thursday by booth volunteers Aziza, Zuhra, and Sabina.
Where are you from?
Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
What will CulturalFest visitors be able to see/do at your booth to learn about Uzbekistan?
They will learn where Uzbekistan is and how it's related to other Turkic cultures as Azeri, Turkish, Uyghur, Tatar, Kazakh, Turkmen, Kyrgyz and so forth. Visitors will also learn that Uzbeks have the same roots as Koreans and Native Americans.
What’s one important thing you want people to know about Uzbekistan?
I'd like people to know about the hospitality and tolerance of the Uzbek people.
If someone was going to travel to Uzbekistan, where would you recommend they visit?
To the museums in Tashkent, including the Museum of the Temurids, Museum of History, Hasti Imam Madrassa, Ko'kaldosh Madrassa, Chorsu, and Eski Juva bazaars. One must-see ancient cities of Bukhara, Samarqand and Khorazm.
When you first arrived at the University of Washington, what surprised you the most about Seattle?
How much Seattleites love coffee!
