Bud Bard, Executive Director of FIUTS from 1967-1972, was awarded the Imperial Decoration “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” by Yoichiro Yamada, Consul General of Japan in Seattle, on November 14, 2019. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made distinguished achievements in international relations and have meaningfully promoted Japanese culture around the world. Notably, “Order of the Rising Sun” is the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government, only behind the Order of the Chrysanthemum and the Order of the Paulownia Flowers, which are typically awarded to heads of state, royalty, and politicians.

“It was such a joy to celebrate Bud in the company of so many friends, family members and colleagues. He really has been instrumental in helping the Puget Sound region build strong global relationships. He’s a great mentor to me and to so many others who continue to look to him for advice and support in our intercultural work. This recognition is so deserved!”

- Era Schrepfer, Executive Director, FIUTS

Bard’s impressive partnership with the international community began in the late 1950s when he worked for Puget Sound Title Insurance. At the encouragement of his boss Kenneth Klesper, Bard and his wife took a year off work to travel all throughout Europe. Upon returning to Seattle, Bard completed a Master’s Degree in Russian and applied to UW’s Office of International Studies at the encouragement of his professor, Dr. Larry Brammer. He then served as a Foreign Student Adviser and as FIUTS Executive Director from 1967-1972.

Following his work at FIUTS, Bard founded American Cultural Exchange in 1973, volunteered for the Ethnic Heritage Council, and served as the President of the Seattle Sister Cities Association. He is a beloved member of the community and FIUTS could not be more proud to recognize the prestigious accomplishments culminating in his receipt of this award by the Japanese Consulate.
