Global Month Photo Contest: Europe
The FIUTS Global Month Photo Contest - with origins in November’s UW Global Month - is a weekly opportunity for members of the FIUTS global community to share images from different regions around the world. The fifth week of the contest features Europe, and we received many beautiful photos taken by photographers from around the world.
There were many great submissions, and it was difficult for the FIUTS staff to choose just three winners! Thank you to everyone for sharing your pictures – continue on to see photo entries and contest winners…

“Hello! I live in Belgrade, Serbia. There's an old fortress (Kalemegdan) in the city centre, with many gorgeous corners and views. Here you can see my favourite place, a big plateau with the famous Victor monument.”
Nataša Matić // Hometown: Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
“This is photo I took on the summer of 2017 at Antwerp, Belgium. My mom used to study abroad here when I was only three. Fourteen years passed, I became a teenager and traveled with her to this same place where she completed her study and chased her dream. Things have changed, but how this city welcome every traveler with its beautiful views and warm-hearted people never change!”
Lucy Liu // Hometown: Beijing, China
“It was taken from hills surrounding Sarajevo.”
Selma Ziga // Hometown: Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
“This photo was taken from the Acropolis, located in central Athens, Greece.
The photo features the city of Athens, as well as Mt. Lycabettus in the middle.”
Ehler Win // Hometown: Seattle, WA
“It’s the colosseum!”
Jonathan Shuster // Hometown: Seattle, WA
“This is the Torpo Stave Church (Torpo Stavkirke in Norwegian), one of the oldest remaining churches, in Hallingdal, Norway. What makes stave churches unique is that they were built during the medieval ages, 14th century, as Christianity was introduced to Norway and they were built completely out of wood, using no nails at all! The pillars were set up like a puzzle atop each other to support the foundation.
Currently only 24 remain in Norway as most were destroyed during the Norwegian Reformation.
What particularly stood out to me, apart from the mind-boggling architectural calculations, was the Christian cemetery and headstones laid out around the Church - The gravestones were decorated with flowers and miniature ornaments, such as gnomes, Cupids, angels and lanterns. Whereas cemeteries are usually associated with grim attitudes and dark, dull colors; never before had I seen such warmth and color displayed on tombstones before!”
Faizah Aziz // Hometown: Dhaka, Bangladesh
“On top of the Notre Dame Tower in Paris, France are the gargoyles overlooking Notre Dame with the Eiffel Tower and River Seine in the background.”
Alvin Duong // Hometown: Santa Clara, California, USA
