CulturalFest Countdown: Learn more about China

Join over 2,000 students, local community members, and elementary school students in travelling the world in a day at FIUTS CulturalFest International Expo on February 10th, 2017!

Spend the day experiencing the cultures of over 40 countries - the Expo features booths developed and staffed by student volunteers from all over the world! The event is free and open to the public.

In the weeks leading up to the Expo, we'll be featuring blog posts about different regions and countries represented at the Expo. Read on to learn three fun facts about China!

Fun Fact 1: China has the largest population in the world!

With over 1.357 billion people, China has the largest population in the world. China is also a very diverse country with over 56 ethnic groups. While there is a great deal of diversity in China, approximately 91.59% of the overall Chinese population are Han Chinese. The Han Chinese population makes up 19% of the world population

Fun Fact #2: China is home to the world’s third longest river!

The Yangtze River reaches 5,797km (3,602 miles) in length. In fact, the Yangtze River is the longest river in the world to flow entirely within one country! The Yangtze river is also very important to the Chinese economy, it is one of China’s major trade routes.

The Three Gorges Dam on the river is the largest dam project and hydro-power station in the world. Generally, people consider the river a dividing line between North China and South China. Areas to the north and the south of the river have many differences in climate, scenery, economics, culture and folk customs.

Fun Fact #3: Pandas!!!

China is home to the world’s largest population of pandas! As of 2014 there was a recorded 1,864 pandas in China! Chengdu in China's Sichuan province is globally known as the home of Pandas.

Adored around the world, the distinctive black and white animal is a national treasure in China and has been the symbol of World Wide Fund since its formation in 1961. While its numbers are slowly increasing, the giant panda remains one of the rarest and most endangered bears in the world.
