Thank you, May
Winter quarter intern May Xu has been a great addition to the FIUTS office team!
Today is the last day in the office for our awesome Winter quarter intern, May Xu. Here's an interview with May to share a little bit about who she is and what she has done in the last few months during her time with FIUTS.
Where are you from?
My hometown is in Wuhan China. It’s the most populous city in central China. Wuhan is a city of rivers and lakes.
What year are you and what are you studying at UW?
This is my senior year at UW. I am studying economics and mathematics.
What made you decide to intern at FIUTS?
I like experiencing different cultures and learning languages of other countries. FIUTS provides me the chance to meet people from different regions in the world. In addition, my previous volunteer experience is also related to international students. FIUTS allows me to help international students adapt to the new environment. By inviting them to FIUTS events, students have fun experience as well as a brief view of American culture.
What have you done during your time as a FIUTS intern? What was your favorite thing that you did?
My day-to-day work includes checking emails, answering phones, and helping students sign up for activities. I also design flyers and update FIUTS event calendar. The favorite thing I did is preparing power point slide show with my team member Sayoko. We selected pictures of different countries, and we enjoyed learning new about countries and exploring their cultures.
What has surprised you most about Seattle culture in comparison with where you are from?
Wuhan has a rich nightlife. Streets can be crowed even at midnight. The nightlife includes street food, bars, restaurants, karaoke, shops, and art galleries. Seattle is a little quiet in the evening, well, except bars. Also, people here are so crazy about football. We don’t have a football team in China. I tried to understand the rules and movement of athletes, and I found out it’s a really cool sport.
What are your plans for next quarter?
Well, next quarter is not my last one at UW. I will continue studying some of my major classes. Besides, I will also start working at another company. I am sure that I will miss my team members at FIUTS a lot!
