Faces of FIUTS: Luke Yin
Faces of FIUTS is a social media campaign that collects personal stories from individuals who are part of our work. During July and August, we will be introducing the 2020-2021 FIUTS Student Board. This week, meet Luke Yin, CulturalFest Expo Co-Chair!

Where are you from?
I was born in Shanghai, China and spent my childhood there. Then I went to school in US since 8th grade. A lot of people have asked me which place I prefer after spending much time in Shanghai and Seattle, but I truly love both of them. I love the city life goodies that Shanghai has to offer such as wide variety of foods everywhere, ease of transportation, and quick access to everything. In the same time, I love how Seattle is less crowded and surrounded by nature, as I enjoy cycling around the lakes and hiking in the Cascades. These two places also have drastically different cultures and lifestyles, which is why I think it is a lot of fun to be able to experience both.
What's your FIUTS story?
In high school, I was working with the ESL (English as Second Language) program to help international students to have a better transition when they first came to US. I wanted to continue doing similar work in college, and that is why when I saw FIUTS on the Dawg Daze calendar, I got immediately interested. I then joined the CulturalFest Expo Committee, where I had a great time planning the CulturalFest Expo and met some great people. During the expo, it was inspiring to see these many cultures presenting their interesting features to our local community. Since I enjoyed my time working on the CulturalFest and agreed with the missions of FIUTS, I decided to become a student board member, so that I can better contribute to the great work that this organization is doing.
How will you change the world?
I will change the world by promoting a diverse mindset. In this time of globalization, the future of the world needs to be determined by listening to the voices from all cultural backgrounds, so that this future works for all people. This is why it is crucial for us to be compassionate and have others in mind when we make decisions about the future. I will most likely work in the IT industry after graduating, and it is a field that has historic underrepresentation of some cultures and the dominance of others. Thus, I want to promote a diverse mindset in this industry so that people in this field are willing to actively listen to those who are not represented when they make decisions. I believe this practice will not only help create a better future, but also lead to a more successful business.
