I am Ivo Evaristo from Angola and I participated in the SUSI on Civic Engagement in early 2019.
SUSI on Civic Engagement was a life changing experience for me. I have had the chance to share valuable time with such amazing people who made the whole experience unique. Being a full-time ambassador for my country during the program made me realize how I can be the voice for the voiceless and how strong we become when we work together. There is strength in numbers!
I have learned so much about the American Civil Rights Movement and how it was key to the attainment of certain basic rights, I also had the chance to gain a better understanding of how men need to be educated on woman’s rights which are human rights. “This Is The Place We Call Home” was my project’s name, the project was focused on supporting homeless children and helping them find their way back to society, so that these children have an actual place to call home that is not the streets. There are always challenges and they are to be faced. I could not have faced them without the skills I gained on project planning.
The SUSI experience makes strangers quickly become part of the FIUTS family and that brings out the best of every single member. All the knowledge and experiences I have lived, still make me grow every day.
To the FIUTS staff: “May you keep on building connections”
SUSI programs promote a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among international students, teachers, and scholars. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) are short-term academic programs for groups of undergraduate leaders, educators, and scholars from around the world. Hosted by academic institutions throughout the United States, these 5- to 6-week Institutes include an intensive academic residency and an integrated educational study tour. Extracurricular cultural and community activities help to broaden the participants’ understanding of U.S. society. Learn more about SUSI programs here.
