1st Place
“This meal is typical of our pacific coast. It has mojarra, also known as goatfish, sometimes other types of fish too, coconut rice, plantain mashed, friend and with salt, a fresh green salad and usually and fresh fruit juice. This usually also comes with a fish soup, very delicious.”
Manuela Dorado Novoa // Hometown: Bogota, Colombia
2nd Place
“This is a bowl of noodles I cooked recently. It has everything in it: mushroom, squash, tomato and chicken. It's easy to make and easy to wash the dishes after eating. I took the photo in my apartment.”
Xiaoman Bian // Hometown: Lianyungang, China
3rd Place
“I needed to check for myself if the coffee was indeed damn fine. Love exploring Washington state!”
Natalia Poma // Hometown: Moscow, Russia
HERE ARE ALL OF THE INCREDIBLE SUBMISSIONS WE RECEIVED - ORDERED RANDOMLY. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE FIUTS PHOTO CONTEST!
- We are excited to reveal next week’s theme at the end of this blog -
“Battambang Noodles or in Khmer/Cambodian, "mee ka la", from recently re-opened Phnom Penh Noodle House in Seattle's International District. The dish consists of rice noodles coated in a sweet, sour, and salty garlic sauce, egg, dried radish, dried shrimp, pickled cucumber, chili, and a variety of fresh garnishes. It tastes exactly like how my mom makes it.“
Alyssa Seng // Hometown: Ventura, CA, USA
“It’s the most recent picture I took on a random early rise morning. It’s the simplicity of the picture, no extra Ingredients or decorations for social media’s attention. It’s the wok wei (when a wok breathes energy into a stir-fry, giving foods a unique concentrated flavor and aroma) concealed smartly in the soup. It’s a dish with temperature and a taste adaptation of spice-craving Chongqing girl. And a bamboo spoon for the sustainable lifestyle spirit.”
Sihong Zhu // Hometown: Chongqing, China
“I took this photo back in April when Seattle was one of the worst-affected places in the country and like many, I was realizing the importance of something as seemingly insignificant as grabbing a quick bite at Chipotle. One afternoon, I decided to recreate the Chipotle veggie bowl from scratch just because, and I was very happy with the result.”
Khyati Mehta // Hometown: Seattle, WA, USA
“This is a photo taken from my favorite coffee shop: Interzone at Corvallis Oregon.
Almost every morning, my best friend and I will go there and a cup of 8 or 12pz Latte. We like the coffee, environment, and people there. And their coffee can not only wake us up but also bless up a wonderful day.”
Kedi Yan // Hometown: China
“This photo was taken on my trip to North India. This plate of food consists of the famous Amritsari Chole( Chickpeas gravy with potatoes from Amritsar), Aloo parantha covered in ghee( Indian bread with stuffed Potatoes), Cucumber Raita, Freshly cut onion rings drizzled with lemon juice and a potato gravy. This food is very famous in North India for breakfast and paired with Sweet Lassi( Sweet Curd drink).. This dish is a complete party for your tastebuds. So the next time you’re in Amritsar, don’t forget to grab a plate!”
Naisha Sachdev // Hometown: Thane, India
“Here's a picture of Laksa! The closest way I can describe it is it's like curry noodle. Laksa is a huge point of debate between regions in Malaysia but I still prefer Laksa from my family's hometown of Sarawak! This picture specifically has a special significance to me because I only visit Sarawak once a year, and I never miss the chance to get some Laksa from this one stall. Yum!”
Yu Hao Wong // Hometown: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
“The picture that I submitted is the famous Penang White Curry Mee (Noodles). It's one of my favorite food in the world. I've tried a lot of curry noodles from the US, from Singapore, even in Penang itself, nothing comes close to the stall that is right around the corner from my childhood home. This picture was taken on my recent trip back to Malaysia last Winter.”
Christopher Sim // Hometown: Georgetown, Malaysia
“Every Friday night marks the Jewish holiday of Shabbat, which we celebrate by lighting candles, drinking wine, and eating a special braided bread called Challah. Although lit candles and wine are not allowed in the dormitories, I was still able to celebrate by baking Challah with some of my favorite people. I took this picture last year just before we put it in the oven to bake to golden brown.”
Emerson Goss // Hometown: Seattle, WA, USA
“This dessert is shaved ice with tropical fruits and condense milk as a toping. Vietnam is humid and hot so families hang out at the park, in the evening, enjoying this.”
Nghi Quan // Hometown: Vinh Long, Vietnam
“The name of the meal is Lamb Stew. I prepared it during Eid al-Fitr (May 2020) in Tripoli, Libya for Muslim friends.”
Gyanu Tamang // Hometown: Kathmandu, Nepal
“Palačinke are the thin, crêpe-like pancake of Eastern Europe. Personally, I like mine with Nutella or something similar, but they are also served with different times of jams or other fillings.”
Layla Jamil // Hometown: Bellevue, WA, USA
“This is a Homemade Chicken Shawarma tower.
I grew up in Dubai, and the taste of authentic Shawarma has stuck to me. Everywhere I go, I yearn for a restaurant that serves shawarma with that authentic taste, and having found nothing similar in taste in Seattle, I decided to make my own at home. As I didn't have the equipment (a vertical roaster) I decided to use my engineering knowledge and creativity to come up with an alternative - using carefully placed skewers. The taste was on-point, the chicken (although it was breast meat, contrary to thigh meat being used usually) was remarkably tender with a crisp exterior. I also made Hummus, Tahini and Toum sauces to go along with it. Served with fries and pickles.
This photo captures my wonder at the raw beauty of the tower just coming out of the oven, ready to make shavings from.”
