FIUTS Celebrates Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month: Thank you, partners

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, which recognizes the many contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to U.S. culture and society

In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, FIUTS would like to celebrate the work of some of our amazing local partner organizations who consistently share stories of Pacific Northwest Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities with a broad audience – including participants of FIUTS short-term Visiting Programs.

Wing Luke Museum

The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience has been providing immersive tours of their historical Chinatown-International District space to FIUTS visiting programs for many years. Visiting students learn about AAPI stories and histories in their own voices and experience the work of contemporary AAPI artists and activists. Check out the Wing Luke website for information about ongoing exhibits and AAPI Heritage Month events.

Bainbridge Island Historical Museum

Bainbridge Island was the first place on the West Coast where people of Japanese ancestry were forced from their homes and brought to internment camps during WWII. Through personalized visits to the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum and the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, the wonderful BIHM staff and volunteers guide visitors through understanding how prejudice and hateful rhetoric led to government policies that deprived individuals of their rights, and how the community recovered after many Japanese-Americans returned following the end of the war.

Thank you to all of our program partners who work tirelessly to share the rich and diverse histories and cultures of AAPI communities throughout the Pacific Northwest!
