The FIUTS CulturalFest on February 19 will feature 11 performing artists and groups who will share cultures from around the world on the Meany Hall stage at the Performance Showcase. At the International Expo, taking place the same day, numerous cultural booths at the UW HUB sharing over 35 different cultures through music, dance, food, conversation, and interactive activities.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing more about the performers and booths who will be sharing their talents at CulturalFest. Today the spotlight is on Sayaw Filipino Folk Dance Troupe.

Meet Sayaw Filipino Folk Dance Troupe- a student-based performing arts dance group of the Filipino American Student Association at the University of Washington.

Sayaw Filipino Folk Dance Troupe is a student-based performing arts dance group of the Filipino American Student Association at the University of Washington. Taking the name from a Filipino word meaning "dance," we share and celebrate the stories of the rich heritage and culture of the Philippines through the artistic expression of dance. We joined CulturalFest to celebrate our culture not just through entertainment, but also through education. While striving to give Filipino Americans the opportunity to gain knowledge and awareness of their cultural heritage, Sayaw has also grown into a great community resource to learn and appreciate traditional Filipino culture, art, folklore, and history.

We hope our performance sparks a desire to learn more about Filipino folk dances; the dances in our set each have their own separate origins and stories despite being grouped in the category which we call the Rural Suite. These are only four dances out of many that exist in The Philippines, so we hope to encourage watchers to learn more about these dances and the stories behind them.”

Performers: Alfred Escorpiso, Angelica Lucero, Jessica Gonzaga, Leah Huff, Rhandell Saya
