Announcing the FIUTS Media Literacy & Leadership Institute with Mali
Announcing a brand-new, very exciting FIUTS Program!
The FIUTS Media Literacy and Leadership Institute (MLLI) is a virtual exchange experience for 20 competitively selected young journalists and media-makers in Mali. We received nearly 100 applications for this program, and recently invited selected participants, who are getting ready to begin their virtual program on February 23!
During this 16-week program, participants will participate in Zoom sessions on topics such as media literacy, combating misinformation and disinformation, journalism skills and ethics, diversity in media, safety and security of journalists, and more. They will connect with Seattle-area professionals and University of Washington student Ambassadors for cultural exchange, including a workshop on intercultural communication. Finally, they’ll have an opportunity to build their skills in leadership and project planning, and will plan and implement a community project or campaign on media literacy in their own community.
More details about the program are available at www.fiuts.org/mlli. The MLLI is funded by a generous grant from the United States Embassy in Bamako.
How you can be involved
We are excited to engage our Seattle-area and global community members in this promising new initiative! Here are some ways to be involved:
Join the MLLI Virtual Networking Reception: Want to meet MLLI participants in Mali and learn more about their work and the program? Mark your calendar for a virtual networking reception that will be held over Zoom on Wednesday, March 30 from 10:30am-12:00pm (Pacific). While we particularly encourage French-speakers to attend, we’ll have an English-speaking breakout room as well! All are welcome - register here.
Become a FIUTS MLLI Ambassador: Ambassadors are UW students, recent alumni, and young professionals working in journalism in the Seattle area. They will meet with the MLLI participants in Mali over Zoom for several synchronous sessions focused on intercultural communication and dialogue on topics related to media and journalism. All Ambassadors for this program must be proficient in French. Learn more at fiuts.org/ambassadors.
Support the Program: Interested in supporting the MLLI in other ways? Contact Ellen Frierson, Director of Education and Outreach, at ellen@fiuts.org.
We can’t want to get started soon! Be sure to follow us on social media for future blog post to introduce our incredible participants and share updates about their work.
