"Empowerment Through Education" - Project by SUSI Alumni
It has been a few since since our Summer SUSI on Civic Engagement has gone back home. Since then, we have been watching their project grow in their communities and we couldn’t be more proud! One of the projects that has been funded by our collaborating non-profit, Meridian, is Empowerment Through Education. This project is being executed by our SUSI Alumni, Nino Zedginidze and Sirunik Avetisyan in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia.
Here is a brief summary about their project, received from Nino and Sirunik:
Our project, Empowerment Through Education is created for kids ages 10-12 years old. It's a group of 15 kids from all the schools in Akhaltsikhe and from the villages, too. We provide them with bus tickets and food during the sessions.
Our main slogan is “Sustainable Development Through Human Rights”. Themes for our project are children and human rights, youth engagement, health & social services, racism and tolerance. In a week, we hold 2 different sessions with 2 different topics. During these sessions, we have different team-building and leadership activities such as, teaching them the importance of working together, volunteerism, collaboration, effective communication, and problem-solving skills.
Our motivational talks and career counseling sessions will also be arranged to inspire children and help them explore their passions. The sessions include group projects, games, and interactive exercises. We also work with university students by offering them volunteering opportunities within the community where students can actively participate and contribute while observing and assisting in classroom activities. These skills are important for them as their future profession is becoming a teacher, so we give them an experience that will benefit them in their future profession.
We are always proud to see our SUSI Alum strive to succeed in their communities. It’s a rewarding sight to see how our own students implement the amazing work they created with FIUTS.
