SUSI Seattle Volunteering

This past week, FIUTS’ 20 SUSIs (Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars) visited FIUTS’ nonprofit partner Food Lifeline at its spacious, well-coordinated Hunger Solution Center in South Seattle.

Almost Covid-style, SUSI students pulled on latex gloves, donned masks, and tied aprons in preparation for their first volunteer experience in the US. Like the other individual and teams of volunteers, they started in shoveling and scooping bulk oats to repackage for the hundreds of food banks that Food Lifeline serves around the Seattle area.

Selected as a site of study for this SUSI program on Civic Engagement, Food Lifeline delivered triple value: students learned about a large nonprofit working through smaller community organizations; witnessed a systematic and efficient volunteer system; and served as volunteers themselves to contribute to the city they living, if only for a short time.

If this is your first introduction to Food Lifeline and you’re interested in making a trip with other FIUTS students to volunteer or taking a group there, let us know! info@fiuts.org
