Kassia Tarsis Retagi on Embracing Growth and Empowerment
My name is Kassia Tarsis Retagi, and I’m from Mozambique. I’m deeply passionate about creating positive change, especially through supporting those in need and advocating for women’s empowerment. My time with SUSI was powerful in helping me gain new perspectives, especially through conversations with incredible women—both my SUSI peers and the mentors who shared their experiences and wisdom.
Growing up in Mozambique, my view of the U.S. was shaped by what I saw in movies—a place that seemed almost perfect. But being in Seattle showed me a different side of reality. I learned that no place is without its challenges, and every place has struggles and challenges. It also made me realize that Africans have all they need to thrive and that our unique perspectives have value to share with the world.
One of the most important lessons I took away from the SUSI program was how quickly young adults can bond over shared goals and experiences. I made some amazing friends, but I also connected with people who care deeply about uplifting others. Since then, I’ve changed in how I approach challenges. I’ve developed a stronger sense of who I want to be and the importance of community and empathy. This has made me more patient, resilient, and driven to make a positive difference.
Since SUSI, I’ve been using what I learned to drive my goals forward. The program didn’t just give me knowledge; it boosted my confidence to pursue my passions with more intensity. SUSI also taught me the power of collaboration and networking, which I’ve used to build stronger connections and create impactful initiatives. These experiences inspire me daily as I work to make a meaningful difference.
