A Summer with STEP: Exploring Language, Culture, and Seattle

This past summer, I had an incredible opportunity to be part of the Language & Culture Short Term English Program (STEP) at the University of Washington in partnership with FIUTS. For years, STEP has been offering language development programs for international students from all over the world, and this year was no different—except maybe a bit more special.

The STEP program is perfect for anyone looking to improve their English skills while getting a taste of American culture. Every morning, students joined experienced instructors for classes where they could practice their speaking and listening skills. But what made this summer extra exciting was what happened after class—students had the chance to explore Seattle’s rich culture and beautiful surroundings guided by our wonderful team at FIUTS.

Seattle is an amazing city, and our afternoons were packed with adventures. We toured Bainbridge Island, walked the stunning trails of Golden Gardens Beach, and visited the Seattle Aquarium to learn more about the region’s marine life. These experiences were more than just sightseeing; they gave students a real-life opportunity to practice English in everyday situations and connect with the local community.

One of the coolest parts of the program was watching the students step out of their comfort zones to interview locals. They asked questions, practiced their English skills, and gained confidence along the way. It was so inspiring to see how these conversations not only helped with language learning aspect of the program but also built lasting memories and friendships.

But this program wasn't just about language; it also focused on issues like justice, equity, and culturally sustaining teaching practices. We made sure that every student, no matter their background, felt included and supported. The goal was to show that language learning can go together with understanding different cultures and building meaningful relationships.

On top of all the language lessons and sightseeing, students got to do fieldwork at a local school, where they witnessed how culturally responsive teaching can make a huge difference. This hands-on experience was a highlight for many students, giving them a deeper understanding of how equity and inclusion play out in American education.

Whether you’re interested in improving your English, learning more about American culture, or just looking for an adventure, the STEP program is an incredible way to experience all of it. You’ll leave not only with better English skills but also with new friends, memories, and a greater appreciation for different cultures. This summer was one I’ll never forget, and I’m excited to see how the next group of students will embrace all that STEP has to offer!
