Emiko, a FIUTS intern from Japan, shares her experiences in Seattle and with CulturalFest.

Emiko Sato has been with FIUTS since January. In her role as an intern, she was a huge help in CulturalFest 2013 and has also been an integral part of our team! The FIUTS staff will be sad to see her go in a few days, but before that happens, hear from Emiko about her background and her experience in Seattle.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am from Japan. I graduated last March from Waseda University in Tokyo with a degree in Chemistry, and then came to the United States. I am studying English/Business at Bellevue College’s International Business Program. The reason why I came here is that I have been interested in different cultures and languages, as well as in chemistry.

How did you come to FIUTS?

I heard that FIUTS has many connections with international students and organizes events. That sounds great to me because I wanted to get involved with international things, and actually CulturalFest was the best opportunity to know different cultures.

What has surprised you most about the US/What have you really enjoyed?

Everything is huge in the US! Houses, the food, the roads, everything! That makes me feel comfortable. I like eating big hamburgers at Red Mill Burgers. Also, I'm amazed I can eat hamburgers while watching movies at Cinebarre. I wish Japan had Cinebarre.

What has surprised you most about Seattle?

The most surprising thing is that I can hear many languages besides English.

Can you tell us about your work here at FIUTS, especially with CulturalFest?

Basically I'm doing front desk work such as ticket selling for the events. Since there was a big event called CulturalFest this quarter, I could work as a booth captain of Japan. Thanks to the volunteers who helped me a lot, we could make a ring toss game and teach origami.

What do you hope people learned from the Japan Booth at CulturalFest?

I hope people learned Japanese traditional games.

What was your favorite part of CulturalFest?

I was able to see the performance show on the second day of CulturalFest. Each country performed a unique dance or instrument. It was awesome and one of my favorite memories.

What are your plans after FIUTS?

I'm going back to Japan and work for a health care company. But I want to come back to Seattle someday.
