Learning about the world
A group of 34 high school and university students from all over the world visit classrooms at TOPS elementary school for Global Ambassador Day.
Post by Yuan Lin Qiu, FIUTS Education Programs Coordinator:
On this past Friday, April 26th, thirty-four students and scholars from all over the world met up at the UW George Washington Statue, ready to teach the students at TOPS Elementary School about their home culture. They are the FIUTS Global Ambassadors. These Global Ambassadors had been preparing their lesson plans weeks before, full of enthusiasm and creative ideas of cultural food demonstrations, games, and language lessons.
On Friday, with teaching supplies in hand (including a hula hoop and rice cooker), the Global Ambassadors made their way to their very own classroom of twenty students from ages 5 to 11, who got to sign up to learn about their country of interest. One class learned how to count to ten in Burmese, one class got to make (and eat) their own Roses de Sables, and another class learned how to greet each other in Japanese with their own custom business cards.
After their two hour lessons, all the Global Ambassadors gathered up again to take a final group photo in front of the welcome sign made by the second graders, while holding up their personalized thank you cards. It was obvious that the excitement and energy of the young students had rubbed off on all the Ambassadors, as everyone was chatting and smiling ear-to-ear.
FIUTS will soon be holding another Global Ambassador Day on May 10th, at Schmitz Park Elementary. To get involved, email lin@fiuts.org.
