CulturalFest Countdown: Meet Seattle Irish Dance Company

This year's CulturalFest Performance Showcase will feature 10 performing artists from around the world on the Meany Hall stage. Read on to learn more about one of this year’s performers, Seattle Irish Dance Company, and watch them on the big stage on February 25!

How did your group begin? Tell us a little bit of your story.

After touring and dancing in a few professional productions, our founder returned home to Seattle and quickly realized that there were no opportunities for her (or any other Irish dancers) to continue their love of professional Irish dance performance in Seattle. Along with a few other like-minded dancers, the Seattle Irish Dance Company debuted our first performances on St. Patrick’s Day 2011. Since then, we’ve been honored to go on several tours, opened recreational classes for adults and performed all over Seattle.

What has performing in past CulturalFests meant to you? What can the audience expect to be different this year?

FIUTs CulturalFest is an annual celebration of the UW community's diversity and unity through dance. CulturalFest is an opportunity to share our traditional art form with the larger community of Seattle and we are honored to perform alongside so many talented dance groups. CulturalFest is a creative platform to connect with other dance groups and support one another's cultural activities throughout the year. This year we will showcase the rhythm of Irish dance in an exciting number that fuses traditional Irish music and steps with modern choreography.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about your performance?

We are excited to perform at CulturalFest because it gives us a unique opportunity to engage with a new audience. Through performance, education, and training, the Seattle Irish Dance Company hopes to encourage a wider community to engage with both traditional and contemporary Irish dance.

General admission tickets are on sale now for $15 online or at the door. Discounted student tickets are available for $10 in advance at the FIUTS office (HUB 206).
