CulturalFest Countdown: Meet Yingyue

This year's CulturalFest Performance Showcase will feature 10 performing artists from around the world on the Meany Hall stage. Read on to learn more about one of this year’s performers, Yingyue and watch them on the big stage on February 25!

How did your group begin? Tell us a little bit of your story.

Our group, Yingyue, is a collaboration between members of Hong Kong Student Association and Chinese Student Assocaition. We noticed there are no other Chinese dance groups on the UW campus; so, we wanted to start our own to promote Chinese culture.

What do you hope the audience will take away from your performance? What do you hope they will learn about the culture(s) that your performance represents?

We hope that the audience will see the beauty and elegance in our cultural Chinese dance performance. Our dance is inspired by an ancient Chinese poem, which comes to show how versatile art can be. One can get inspiration from anything, such as from Chinese culture and arts, to combine with and make something beautiful out of it.

What has performing in past CulturalFests meant to you? What can the audience expect be different this year?

Previously, the Chinese dance performance was a duet. However, this year, at CulturalFest 2017, we are a group of nine, which means the audience can expect more dynamics, choreography, and synchronization!

Is there anything else you would like people to know about your performance?

Something that was a little unexpected was that changing from a dance duo to Yingyue, our current group, has allowed more coherency and chemistry in our dance choreography. We are super excited to have the audience watch our performance on February 25th!
