CulturalFest 2022 Spotlight: Margaret Tu from Taiwan
The FIUTS CulturalFest on February 19 will feature 11 performing artists and groups who will share cultures from around the world on the Meany Hall stage as well as numerous cultural booths at the UW HUB sharing over 35 different cultures through music, dance, food, conversation, and interactive activities.
Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing more about the performers and booths who will be sharing their talents at CulturalFest. Today the spotlight is on Margaret Tu from Taiwan doing a solo song performance.
Meet Margaret Tu - a solo performer for the FIUTS CulturalFest Performance Showcase singing in Taiwanese Mandarin in hopes of being a bridge between mainstream society and Taiwan indigenous peoples
“I will be performing at CulturalFest 2022 sharing about the culture of Taiwan indigenous peoples, and singing “LiúLàngJì” (流浪記): composed by Panai. Panai is an indie-singer and activist in social movements of self-determination.
This song is sung in Taiwanese Mandarin, instead of the indigenous peoples’ traditional languages. My interpretation is that- the song is like a bridge. Most of the population in Taiwan speak Taiwanese Mandarin because of the cultural assimilation for hundreds of years. The song is a way to communicate with the mainstream society—to let them know our existence, our struggle; yet, most importantly, our strength and resistance.”
