CulturalFest Spotlight: Awaaz

The FIUTS CulturalFest on February 19 will feature 11 performing artists and groups who will share cultures from around the world on the Meany Hall stage at the Performance Showcase. At the International Expo, taking place the same day, numerous cultural booths at the UW HUB share over 35 different cultures through music, dance, food, conversation, and interactive activities.

This week, we will be sharing more about the remaining performers who will be sharing their talents at CulturalFest. Today the spotlight is on Awaaz.

Meet Awaaz-an a cappella team that takes songs from South-Asian and Western culture and creates harmonious arrangements of all varieties.

“UW Awaaz is a competitive South-Asian fusion a cappella team which takes songs from South-Asian and Western culture and creates harmonious arrangements of all varieties. Founded in 2009 by UW alumni Joyita Banerjee and Pratyusha Banik, Awaaz has followed in the tradition of other South-Asian a cappella groups while continuing to innovate the genre by incorporating elements from different cultures and media. From classic Bollywood hits by A.R. Rahman to popular American songs from different genres, we aim to cultivate fusions that provoke emotions of joy and nostalgia, while appealing to audiences of all musical backgrounds!

We hope that the audience can not only appreciate the diversity and the beauty infusing in such genres, but also recognize the universality in certain musical features that are shared by cultures worldwide.”
