Embracing Diversity and Empowering Change: The FIUTS Ambassador Program

Seattle-area high school and university students - apply today to volunteer as a FIUTS Ambassador this summer! Ambassadors connect with international students in Seattle for a short term program, sharing their cultures and serving as peer mentors and friends.

FIUTS Ambassadors: Meet Emerson! (aka Emersaurus around the FIUTS community)

Emerson Goss has been volunteering as a FIUTS Ambassador since Summer 2022. He answered some questions about the program to share his experience.

What motivated you to become a part of the FIUTS Ambassador Program?

I was eager to interact with people from places I hadn't learned about before and make new friends. Additionally, I wanted to represent my city, Seattle, and showcase its diversity and culture.

Can you share a memory from your Ambassador experiences?

One memorable moment was when, during the SUSI program, we went to a karaoke night in the University District. It was a fantastic evening filled with fun and amazement at how well everyone got along. Even though we all came from very different backgrounds, the music we were singing along with really bonded us as peers.

How do you think the program promotes cross-cultural understanding?

The program has helped me grow as a global citizen and foster a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures. I have aimed to be a good representative of my country and provide a deeper understanding of my home beyond what the media portrays. It has allowed me to share a more accurate view of life in the US and put things into perspective. It also allowed me to learn more about the participants’ countries beyond what is portrayed in the media.

What challenges have you faced as a FIUTS ambassador, and how did you overcome them?

Sometimes, I had to prioritize and explain my inability to attend certain events. I also think language barriers have posed some difficulties, particularly when trying to understand different accents. I am also an introverted person, so communication and assertiveness have been areas of growth for me.

Have you stayed in touch with the students you’ve met in the program?

Maintaining connections with participants has been incredible. One particular student who participated in the program still keeps me updated on his community project, and his dedication inspires me to make a difference in my own community. Staying connected with people from around the world and celebrating their achievements makes me feel connected to their countries.

What advice would you give to a new FIUTS Ambassador?

I would advise future FIUTS Ambassadors to go beyond the scheduled events if they have the time and energy. Engaging with participants on a deeper level outside the schedule allows ambassadors to form more authentic connections. It's important to be yourself and represent your own country while also being open to taking risks and building closer relationships.
