Kanda University Exchange Program: A Journey of Growth and Connection
Last month, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the FIUTS Kanda University Exchange Program, helping facilitate a unique cultural and educational experience for 17 students from Japan. As part of the FIUTS team, I also had the privilege of working closely with them and witness their growth and curiosity. The students formed meaningful bonds with their host families, experiencing daily life in Seattle while sharing their own cultures.
One of the key components of the program was leadership development. The students participated in workshops led by FIUTS where they learned how to align their personal values with leadership actions. It was inspiring to see them embrace the responsibility and develop their leadership skills in a hands-on environment.
But the experience wasn’t just about workshops and meetings. The students also got to explore Seattle and its cultural diversity. We went on a scavenger hunt at Pike Place Market, attended a Mariners baseball game, visited Gates Foundation Discovery Center, volunteered at Food Lifeline, and even met with visiting Iraqi students. These experiences helped the Kanda students gain a deeper understanding of diversity in the U.S. while sharing their own traditions and perspectives.
Another key focus of the program was improving the students’ English skills. Watching them grow more confident in their communication, especially during the final presentations where they shared their personal beliefs in "This I Believe" speeches, was rewarding.
Being a part of the Kanda University Exchange Program was an unforgettable experience. I’m proud of the students and how much they achieved in such a short time. Their openness to learning, both academically and culturally, made a lasting impact on me too. I look forward to continuing my involvement with FIUTS and similar programs in the future.
