The fourth week of the contest features Africa, and we received many beautiful photos taken by photographers from around the world.
There were many great submissions, and it was difficult for the FIUTS staff to choose just three winners! Thank you to everyone for sharing your pictures – continue on to see photo entries and contest winners…
1st Place
“The Arch of Kamandjan, commonly known as ‘’ Kamandjan donda na bôda ’(Kamandjan Entrance and Exit Gate), is located about four kilometers northwest of the village of Siby. This cultural and natural landscape is a real arch carved in sandstone, which overhangs a solid mass of sandstone granite. This massif serves as a protective wall for the entire village of Siby. According to legend, the Ark is attributed to Kamandjan, one of the greatest lieutenants of Soundjata Kéïta.
The valiant and legendary general is said to have sculpted the granite massif with a single blow of his saber, during demonstrations of power and occult powers, in front of Soumangourou KANTÉ ( his greatest enemy) and his troops”

2nd Place
“The view of the mosque of Djingarey-Ber in Timbuktu, Mali. Djingarey Ber is the Friday Mosque, and so the largest one in the city. The building was financed by the Sultan of Mali, Elhaj Kankou Moussa, a short time after his return from a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1325. It was rebuilt in the sixteenth century by par Elhadj Al-Aqib, Cadi of Timbuktu, who added the southern portion. The mosque has been extended later as can be easily detected.”
Ahmed Ag Mohamed // Hometown: Timbuktu, Mali
3rd Place
“This picture was taken in Tunisia, exactly at the famous city of Sidi bou Saïd , where the sea meets traditional buildings, all in white and blue. The picture was taken during a tour we had with two exchange students who are friends of mine ( from Germany and Turkey). I was introducing them to some of the attractive places in Tunisia when I was exposed to this amazing view from a top of a hill, and couldn't resist to pick my phone and take a memory. The view was so beautiful and didn't need any kind of filters! What you are seeing is natural !
The picture englobes the beauty of Tunisian coasts mixed with purely Tunisian architecture.”
